While it includes a touch of friendly competition, the focus is recreational and on having a great time. Spark Golf is open to anyone looking to play golf, regardless of their skill level.

How Spark Golf Works

Spark Golf leagues typically involve playing 9-hole rounds. Players play rounds under a relaxed set of rules to keep the experience casual and fun. Players can join with a partner or play as a single with other Spark players.

Leagues usually meet weekly. You can play every week or as often as your schedule allows. Furthermore, there is no fee to join the league; players only pay for the rounds they choose to play.

Players enter scores using the Spark app or mobile website, allowing for live scoring as the round progresses. Players earn points towards the season standings based on their finish each round. In addition, the league uses a handicap system to help keep competition fair.

Spark Golf Handicaps

Handicaps are provided in Spark Golf, meaning an existing handicap is not necessary to join. The system aims to keep competition fair and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of skill level.

The initial number of Spark strokes a player receives is based on a self-reported “good 9-hole score”. A table shows how these strokes are assigned based on that score. A “stroke” reduces a player’s gross (actual) score on a specific hole to calculate their net score. For example, if a player gets a stroke on a hole and scores a gross 5, their net score is 4.

Strokes are applied to a player’s 9-hole round starting with the lowest handicap holes on the course’s scorecard. If a player receives 3 strokes, they get one stroke each on the 3 lowest handicap holes. The maximum number of Spark strokes for a round is 18.

The number of strokes a player gets is recalculated after each round. This number fluctuates based on league scores. Once a player has played two or more rounds, their handicap is calculated by averaging the strokes over par from their best 2 rounds out of their last 5. For players with only one round played, the handicap is the average of the score over par in that round and their initial good 9-hole score.

Scoring Format

Each round features two games: a team game and an individual game. It is important to note that the format is NOT a scramble; each player plays their own ball into the hole.

In the team game, 2-person teams play a net best ball format. Specifically, after players hole each ball, the team enters each player’s gross score into the Spark app. Then the app calculates the net score for each player based on current handicaps. Team score used for the hole is the better of the two net scores from the players on the team.

The individual game is simply the net score for each player on their own ball. The Spark app displays the maximum score a player can take on each hole. They encourages players to pick up if they reach this score before holing out to help with pace of play.

Finally, Skins are also available each round. Spark Golf awards a skin to the individual with the lowest non-tied, net score on a hole during the round.
